Synthetic Diamonds - Gems Cost Too Much? Grow Your Own!

Two companies are pioneering the synthetic diamond science; Apollo Diamond in Boston and Gemesis in Florida have perfected a method of creating diamonds from carbon in a lab. Both are capable of creating gem quality diamonds up to about 2 carats. Then there is Life Gem, a company that creates diamonds from cremated human and animal remains. Life Gem can get diamonds up to 1.3 carats. So, you can't get a circle of life necklace 14k diamond out of Aunt Edna yet, but that day may come.

The processes these companies use to create diamonds are not to the point where the gems can be mass produced, but all are capable of creating diamonds that, were they mined, would be worth thousands of dollars for about a hundred bucks. It is only a matter of time before synthetic diamonds are able to flood the diamond market and set DeBeers on its monopolizing ears, something the London Cartel is none too happy about.

The prospects for these "home grown" diamonds are endless, including the possibility that the machinery for creating the stones could one day be cheap enough to mass produce, enabling anyone with a few hundred dollars to start creating diamonds literally in their basement or back yard.

It is a brave new world indeed.
