Diamond Grading Laboratories Report - Fakes Running Rampant!

It is not as easy as it once was to spot fake diamond without contracting the services of the Gemological Institute of America or any other diamond grading laboratories. No longer will banging the "gem" on a hard surface to see if it's made of glasswork help you discern a fake diamond from the real thing. Even an expert may not be able to tell just by looking anymore. As a result, fakes are everywhere and people looking for diamonds should take some precautions to help them learn to recognize a fake diamond when they see one.

Cubic zirconias have long been the substance of choice in creating synthetic diamonds. At a glance, they look like the real thing, but close examination can betray them as fakes quickly. They lack the sparkle of a real diamond and are often set in inferior metals. A newer synthetic substance for creating "diamonds" is called moissanite. This substance mimics diamonds much more closely, and the difference is nearly impossible to tell with the naked eye or even with a jeweler's loupe.

This can be done by a number of means: shopping with a diamond merchant they trust, asking for a GIA report certifying the stones are real diamonds, and taking their diamonds in for an independent diamond appraisal.

When you see how far technology has come in such a short time with recreate the most dazzling beauty in nature, it is exciting to think what the future may bring. Who knows? In another decade, manmade diamonds may surpass those found in nature.
