No matter how many diamonds I managed to cough up I would be in the doghouse for a long time. No necklace or diamond could save me… or could it? "Hi, honey," I said, "I'm sorry I'm late." I walked over and kissed her cheek. She pulled away as if I were a snake. The diamonds on her earlobes winked at me accusingly. "Happy anniversary?"

"Now you remember?" she snapped. She was gorgeous and the beautiful dress and diamond jewelry added to the package.

"Of course I remember," I said. "I wanted tonight to be special… but the meeting ran late and I couldn't get to the jeweler's and…"

"The jeweler's?" She still sounded cross, but she was softening.

"Oh… That's supposed to be a surprise." I paused for effect. This just might work. "Oh heck, I've messed it up anyway. I was going to get you that necklace you wanted. The diamond thing, with the butterfly…"

She smiled. "You were going to give me that butterfly necklace? The one with all the diamonds?"

I had her. "Yes. I know how diamonds are your favorite. I wanted it to be a surprise for tonight, but what if I take off tomorrow and we get it?"

I was engulfed in a warm embrace. Disaster averted. Diamonds saved my bacon again.
